Introduction:

This one-year full-time course is designed to facilitate students who wish to work as classroom assistants/special needs assistants, or who wish to pursue employment in childcare. It will include an introduction to working with children who have special educational needs, studying the categories of special needs, exploring the role of teamwork and managing challenging behaviour.

Entry Requirements:

Applicants should have the Leaving Certificate or equivalent. Mature applicants are also welcome. Selection will be made by interview.

Career Opportunities:

Students who achieve a full FETAC Level 5 award may apply to Early Childhood Care & Education Degree, (ECCE ) in the Institute of Technology Tralee, Early Childhood Studies Degree in U.C.C., Cork and Early Childhood Care and Education Degree in Mary Immaculate College, Limerick.

Work Experience:

One day per week will be spent as a classroom assistant or in any childcare setting.

Garda Vetting:

Satisfactory Garda Vetting is a mandatory part of completing registration for this programme. Failure to obtain satisfactory Garda Vetting may result in de-registration.

Course Fees:

In additional to the college fees of €150, there will be additional fees for First-Aid and Workshops.

Certification:

Students who complete the course successfully qualify for:

  • A FETAC (Level 5) award in School Age Childcare – DSACX
  • A First-Aid Certificate
  • A Certificate in Sign Language
  • A College Certificate
