Introduction:

This is a one-year full time course that may help students to gain employment in the media industry. The points from this course can also be used to gain entry into certain third level courses.

Course Content:

  • Writing Skills for Journalism:
    • Enables learners to write news stories, editorials, reviews and features.
  • Teamworking:
    • Creates opportunities for students to work as a team in order to bring tasks to fruition. Develops the necessary skills to enable students to make valuable contributions in the workplace.
  • Radio Programme Production:
    • Enables students to produce interviews, voxpops and radio programmes.
  • Media Analysis:
    • Provides a broad understanding of the theory that underpins practical media work giving a critical understanding of subtle media influences.
  • Technical Skills for Journalism:
    • The technical skills of word processing, editing, sub editing and page design.
  • Research Skills for Journalism:
    • Enables learners to prepare, research and present for various forms of media.
  • Legal Studies:
    • Law and legal issues for journalists in the work place; court reporting; libel laws; copyright and general legal studies.
  • Work Experience:
    • One day per week spent working in the media industry or in a closely related field.
  • Word Processing:
    • Improves the quality of text production and presentation.

Entry Requirements:

Suitable candidates will be expected to show an aptitude for this course through an interview process. Samples of written skills and references may be required.

Career Opportunities:

Those who excel in this course may be considered for employment by the following: Local newspapers; Radio stations; as researchers for various organisations; Press officers; Freelance journalists.
(Alternatively, the points from this course can be used to gain entry into certain third level courses)

Work Experience:

One day per week will be spent on work experience. This will introduce and prepare students for employment, in their chosen area, enabling them to form links with local industry.

Course Fees:

Registration fee of €150 applies.

Certification:

Students who complete the course successfully qualify for:

  • A FETAC (Level 5) award in Media – EMPXX
  • A College Certificate
