Introduction:

This is a one-year course which provides for students who wish to pursue careers in the engineering industry and the motor industry.

Course Content:

  • Engineering Practice: Full use of the Engineering workshop to develop the necessary skills
  • Welding: Electric and gas welding techniques and skills for the improver
  • Turning: Lathe skills practiced and developed.
  • Motor Technology: Hands on experience in servicing of motors
  • CNC Programming: Use of CNC laser, milling machine, lathe and moulding machine to produce a range of artefacts
  • CAD: Computer Graphics to develop design ideas
  • Material Science: The study of materials and their properties
  • Safety and Health at Work: Safe working practices for industry
  • Communications: Skills for communicating and interviews
  • Word Processing: Essential skills in document preparation and presentation

Entry Requirements:

Applicants should the leaving certificate or an equivalent. This course is also open to mature students. Suitable candidates who show aptitude will be selected for the course.

Career Opportunities:

Welding, Metal Fabrication, Motor Mechanic and other related careers. Graduates of this Engineering course may progress to other Higher Education institutions to study courses such as mechanical, civil, structural, electrical, electronic and computer engineering. They may alternatively obtain apprenticeships or may go directly to work in industry.

Work Experience:

One day a week will be spent on work experience. This will introduce and prepare students for employment in their chosen areas and enable them to form contacts with local industry.

Course Fees:

Registration fee of €150 applies.

Certification:

Students who complete the course successfully qualify for:

  • A FETAC (Level 5) award in Engineering Technology – CENGT
  • A College Certificate
