Introduction:

This is a one-year full time course offering a practical introduction for those wishing to explore and develop their knowledge of disability and practice. It is designed to facilitate individuals who wish to work in the areas of intellectual disability nursing, psychiatric nursing or as an assistant in disability settings.

Course Aims:

  • To create awareness of persons with disabilities and their needs
  • To develop communication and interpersonal skills
  • To develop a person centred approach to disability
  • To understand the needs for inclusion and integration in society
  • To become aware of the rights and entitlements of persons with disabilities

Entry Requirements:

Applicants should have the Leaving Certificate or equivalent. Mature applicants are also welcome. Selection will be made by interview.

Career Opportunities:

Students who achieve a full FETAC Level 5 award may apply for entry into Intellectual Disability Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing and Mental Health Nursing in the Institutes of Technology and Universities.

Course Fees:

In addition to the registration fee of €150, there will be a nominal fee for First-Aid and workshops.

Work Experience:

One day per week will be spent in a closely related field.

Garda Vetting:

Satisfactory Garda Vetting is a mandatory part of completing registration for this programme. Failure to obtain satisfactory Garda Vetting may result in de-registration.

Certification:

Students who complete the course successfully qualify for:

  • A FETAC (Level 5) award in Community and Health Services - DCHSX
  • First-Aid Certificate and a Manual Handling Certificate
  • A College Certificate
