Introduction:

This is a one-year, full-time course providing the student with the skills, knowledge and experience to gain employment working with young children and also for those who wish to participate in pre-school education in both the business and community section.

Course Content:

  • Montessori: This module details the philosophy of Montessori and the education methodologies used
  • Caring For Children (0-6 years):This module is designed to equip the learner with the skills and knowledge to care for children aged 0-6 years
  • Early Childhood Education:Students investigate the purpose and potential of play activities for young children and introduces the concept of child age programs
  • Child Development:This module entails detailed consideration of a child’s development from 0-6 years and an outline of development from 0-10 years
  • Human Growth and Development:This focuses on the psychology of childhood, the psychology of adolescence, and the psychology of adulthood
  • Safety and Health at Work:provides the learner with skills and knowledge to promote and maintain safety and health in the working environment
  • Communications:Students will concentrate on improving their communication skills
  • Social Studies:This develops the students’ awareness of contemporary social issues and social services in childcare
  • Working in Childcare:Equips the student with personal skills and knowledge required to work in a professional manner with, parents and colleagues, in the home or in a childcare setting

Entry Requirements:

Applicants should have the Leaving Certificate or equivalent, references and attend for an interview.

Career Opportunities:

Successful students can expect to gain employment in a wide range of settings including: Montessori, Nurseries, naoinri, playgroups, crèches, pre-schools, day care centres, private homes and primary schools. Students may also opt to continue their studies in the FETAC Level 6 Montessori and Childcare Management.

Work Experience:

One day per week will be spent on work experience. This involves students working under direction in the childcare area reviewing and evaluating their work. It will introduce and prepare the students for employment in their chosen areas and enable them to form links with local industry.

Garda Vetting:

Satisfactory Garda Vetting is a mandatory part of completing registration for this programme. Failure to obtain satisfactory Garda Vetting may result in de-registration.

Course Fees:

In addition to the college registration fee of €150, there will be additional fees for First-Aid and Workshops.

Certification:

Students who complete the course successfully qualify for:

  • A FETAC (Level 6) award in Childcare – DCHSC
  • A First-Aid Certificate
  • A College Certificate
