Introduction:

This is a one-year full time course specialising in the care of people in their own homes as well as in a variety of care settings. It enhances a student’s knowledge of community needs and services and prepares them for such work.

It gives students an appreciation of caring for all age groups. The students will gain experience while working in an appropriate care setting.

Entry Requirements:

Applicants should have a Leaving Certificate or equivalent. Mature adults including VTOS or those with previous experience are also welcome. Suitable candidates who show aptitude for the course will be selected by interview.

Career Opportunities:

Opportunities exist for care assistants in hospitals, nursing homes and in the community. The course facilitates mature students to return to education. It offers assistance with interview skills and aptitude test preparation. The points from this course may be used to gain access to higher education courses.

Work Experience:

One day per week will be spent on work experience in a local care setting, hospital or nursing home. This will introduce and prepare the students for employment in their chosen areas and enable them to form links with local industry.

Garda Vetting:

Satisfactory Garda Vetting is a mandatory part of completing registration for this programme. Failure to obtain satisfactory Garda Vetting may result in de-registration.

Course Fees:

In addition to the college registration fee of €150, there will be extra charges for vaccination cover, Manual Handling and First-Aid certification.

Certification:

Students who complete the course successfully qualify for:

  • A FETAC (Level 5) award in Care, Community and Health Services – DCHSX
  • A Certificate in Manual Handling Awareness and Patient Moving
  • A First-Aid Certificate
  • A College Certificate
