Introduction:

This course is designed to equip learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to work with children and adults with Special Educational Needs in a Primary school, Post-Primary school, Special Units and other care settings.

Course Content:

Mandatory Modules:
  • Child Development
  • Special Needs – Teaching Methodologies
  • Supervision in Childcare
  • Disability Awareness
  • Early Childhood Programmes
  • Social and Legal Issues in Childcare

A variety of workshops will be held in Art, Drama, Writing, Music and Art Therapy in the classroom and Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA).

Entry Requirements:

A FETAC Level 5 Award

Work Experience:

Learners will be on work experience two days per week in a classroom or in any special care setting.

Garda Vetting:

Satisfactory Garda Vetting is a mandatory part of completing registration for this programme. Failure to obtain satisfactory Garda Vetting may result in de-registration.

Career Opportunities:

Students who achieve a full FETAC Level 6 award may apply to Early Childhood Care and Education (Hons) Degree, (ECCE) in the Institute of Technology Tralee, Early Childhood Studies Degree in UCC and Early Childhood Care and Education Degree in Mary Immaculate College, Limerick.

Certification:

Students who complete the course successfully qualify for:

  • A FETAC (Level 6) award in Childcare – DCXXX
  • A College Certificate
