Introduction:

This is a two-year course for students who wish to gain employment as an accounting technician. It is also suitable for people who have some practical experience in preparing accounts.

The course follows the syllabus, programme and exams of the Accounting Technicians of Ireland (ATI). The objective of the Accounting Technicians of Ireland is to provide a recognised qualification of standing for any ambitious young person wishing to work in the accounting profession.

Year 2:
  • Financial Accounting II
  • Taxation II
  • Integrated Accounting Systems
  • Management Accounting

Entry Requirements:

First year students should have attained the following minimum standards in their Leaving Certificate:

  • Five passes at ordinary level (grade D or above) or four passes, of which at least two are at higher level (grade D or above)
  • Passes must include English and either Mathematics or Accountancy.
  • Other recognised qualifications are also considered e.g. FETAC, HETAC etc.
  • Students who successfully complete first year exams are eligible for year two.
  • Mature students over twenty-three may enrol on the basis of age and experience rather than educational background.

Career Opportunities:

This course prepares students for employment in accounting departments of commercial or public sector organisations or in the offices of practicing accountants. Members may proceed to Year 2 of the Business Studies Degree in the Institute of Technology, Tralee or may proceed to qualify as accountants where exemptions are available from professional accountancy bodies including CPA, ACA and ACCA.

Course Fees:

In addition to the registration fee payable to the college, students must pay a fee to the Accounting Technicians of Ireland.
